But after 3…d4! things are not that clear.īlack is planning to play …Nc6, …e5, and …Bxc5 to get a great position. Let’s try to find out what it is that he likes so much about this line!įirst of all, for White, it is tempting to play 3.dxc5: after this move, Black’s d5-pawn is hanging and 3…dxc4 would lead to a bad endgame for them. Overall he played more than 50 games with the Austrian Defense. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, a top grandmaster from Azerbaijan, tried this opening in blitz, rapid, and classical chess. In any case, Black emerges with a solid and playable position. White can also keep the tension, but which move to choose then? It is hard to assess which pawn is better to take. If someone sees this position for the first time, they might easily get confused. The opening starts with the moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c5. He used the Austrian Defense as Black to beat his second, Daniil Dubov. Nowadays it has been played a ton by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and once even by Magnus Carlsen. Most people have never seen its starting position, although it has been known since 1604! The other issue is white can force either a meran semislav with 4.e3 (though you can consider switching to a stonewall then, its not my cup of tea though) which is quite theoretical so probably not "uncommon but good".Austrian Defense, also known as the Symmetrical Defense, is quite a rare opening. The main reason I am not recommending this directly is that black tends to be walking a shaky tightrope and you have to be willing to play risky pawn grabber styles in some lines. The positions are a bit unusual in many lines (eg 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 dxc4 5.e3 b5 6.a4 Bb4 7.Bd2 a5 8.axb5 Bxc3 9.Bxc3 cxb5 10.b3 Bb7 11.bxc4 b4 12.Bb2 is the starting point for one of the main lines, where black has connected passed pawns as compensation for the bishop pair and white center.)

Nowadays I like to go for a triangle slav (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6) which is not common at the top level and sound enough below professional level. I stand by the opinion that it is underrated and it fits your criteria of being uncommon. I would have kept playing it, but the main issue is that my opponents at that rating usually either prepped 2.Nf3 (so I needed another weapon anyways) or would spend the night becoming experts of the white side of the opening.Īssuming you are below 2200 I can absolutely recommend the Budapest. I played the Budapest until I hit a 2300 OTB rating. Black can take the initiative if white just potters about.

So white doesn't get to play a normal QGD where they can set up however they like and black is passively defending. Ne4 to restrain white's ambitions, which wouldn't be possible in a normal QGD, and can play. I'm not an expert on this stuff by any means, but having the bishop on b4 seems to increase black's options. d5 for this purpose, making Bb4 seem redundant. In the Ragozin, Black has already played. This is in contrast to the Nimzo (which I enjoy playing) where Bb4 stops White from playing e4. Other times you exchange the bishop for the c3 knight like in the Nimzo, to mess up white's pawn structure and gain control of e4 and c4.Īlso, sometimes you just drop the bishop back to e7 or f8 and carry on like a better version of the QGD. e5 in QGD structures, it feels like I'm solving all my opening problems (e.g. e5, which I think is what you go for if you've been forced to put the knight in front of the c-pawn (if white pushes d5, you go.

I think Ragozin's original idea was to drop the bishop back to d6, play. Lines where White plays Qa4+ and forces Black to play Nc6 while the c pawn is still on c7 were also uncomfortable.

I tried the Ragozin a while ago but couldn't understand how to make use of my Bishop being on b4. Please continue to give us your feedback and suggestions on how we can help make /r/chess better for everyone.
