Nowadays I like to go for a triangle slav (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6) which is not common at the top level and sound enough below professional level. I stand by the opinion that it is underrated and it fits your criteria of being uncommon. I would have kept playing it, but the main issue is that my opponents at that rating usually either prepped 2.Nf3 (so I needed another weapon anyways) or would spend the night becoming experts of the white side of the opening.Īssuming you are below 2200 I can absolutely recommend the Budapest. I played the Budapest until I hit a 2300 OTB rating. Black can take the initiative if white just potters about.
So white doesn't get to play a normal QGD where they can set up however they like and black is passively defending. Ne4 to restrain white's ambitions, which wouldn't be possible in a normal QGD, and can play. I think Ragozin's original idea was to drop the bishop back to d6, play. Lines where White plays Qa4+ and forces Black to play Nc6 while the c pawn is still on c7 were also uncomfortable.
